Possible MT 43-2022: Sable Highlands Conservation Easement Tract

MT 2022

Sable Highlands Conservation Easement Tract

Thinking about a possible MT site way up on the northern slope of the adks. It will need a scouting adventure to be sure that it is suitable but it looks like it could be a good place for us to check out. A bit far of a drive but good water, a decent climb and a short drive to bars.  Just an idea at this point. https://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/71173.html

There are 3 possibilities for a campsite.

Possible camping site Sable Highlands Conservation Easement. On the south end of Upper Chateaugay Lake:

Or, …perhaps this campsite on the South-East shore of Chazy Lake…

The Climb: https://www.cnyhiking.com/LyonMountain.htmLyon Mountain Fire tower Trail is a 7.1 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lyon Mountain, New York that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

One of the tougher Firetower hikes with two options to the summit that offers full 360 degree views.

Lyon Mountain, at 3830 feet, is the highest point in Clinton County and the highest point north of the Saranac River. It is located in the northeastern part of Adirondack Park, west of Plattsburgh, NY in the Chazy Highlands Wild Forest. There is a new 3.4 mile trail that winds its way to the summit and fire tower. The trail has an overall elevation gain of 1900 feet over the 3.4 miles. The old trail is shorter (2.5 m each way) and steeper. The old trail is not maintained.

The hike is long but you are rewarded with a 360 degree view from the fire tower. Views all the way to Montreal to the north, the Green Mountains and Vermont to the East and the high peaks to the south.

Currently this proposal of a MT site is desktop conjecture. As stated earlier all of this will need confirmation by ManTrip scouts. Speaking of scouts, Ed will again be in Newcomb before the MT weekend and will hopefully be able to give us a report on the state of the Moose Pond road site in case we decide to go to the old standby spot.
